The theme for the workshop at Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein was "sitting by the sea". I chose the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.
The place by the sea was analyzed and developed further into a concept. Starting with the calm, cool presence of the cliffs, combined with the freedom and lightness that you feel up there. A stable base body that allows the wind to pass through the spaces between the layers. Individual layers break out of the ordered body, inspired by the layers of the rocks.
This is how the “layered” chair was created, which blends into the landscape.
On the left the prototype, cut out of cardboard and assembled with toothpicks, to visualize the concept.
The further developed version in the middle, built from poplar plywood, sawn out by hand shows the look I wanted to achieve.
After the workshop days the final version was created. Built in CAD with an improved design and cut out with the laser cutter, achieved the best version of this chair "layered" yet.
